FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ga. — A domestic violence incident involving an armed individual in Franklin County prompted a multi-agency response Sunday afternoon, ultimately ending in a peaceful surrender after several hours of negotiations, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were initially dispatched to Burroughs Road in Canon following reports of an armed subject. Authorities said the situation remained active as local and state agencies responded to assist. Officials also stated at the time that there was no danger to the public.
As the situation unfolded, investigators determined that the suspect, identified as J. Scott Michaels, had allegedly committed two counts of aggravated assault against a member of the household. Michaels was also reported to be experiencing suicidal ideations.
Law enforcement personnel engaged in negotiations with Michaels for approximately five hours. The standoff concluded when Michaels surrendered to the Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team without further incident. No injuries were reported.
Michaels has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, and officials say additional charges are pending.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Patrol and Criminal Investigations Divisions, the Hart County Sheriff’s Office, Lavonia Police Department, Franklin County EMS, Franklin County Dispatch, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and the Georgia State Patrol, along with its SWAT team.
